Charting 1997: 26th July

It's the week of the big battle between to ex-members of Take That! And, er nobody cares that much, because neither of them is even the highest new entry.

01. (2) Puff Daddy And Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You
Despite Oasis outselling them more than 2-1 the week before, they had little momentum and this was comfortably able to return after only one week away.
02. (1) Oasis - D'You Know What I Mean?
03. (4) Gala - Freed From Desire
04. (3) Coolio - C U When U Get There ft 40 Thevz
05. (8) Ultra Nate - Free
06. (6) Sash! - Ecuador
07.(NE) The Seahorses - Blinded By The Sun
Yes, this is the biggest new song of the week. One of the few tracks on their first (and, as it turned out, only) album written by lead singer Chris Helme. As a result we're spared the cod-metal tendencies of a lot of John Squire's work at this time and this might in fact be their best single.
08.(NE) Robbie Williams - Lazy Days
The first of many Williams hits co-written by Guy Chambers (though he had also produced 'Old Before I Die'); it's apparently based on an unreleased song by Chambers' former band The Lemon Trees.
09. (5) Michael Jackson - History/Ghosts
10.(NE) Changing Faces - G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T.
One of many hits R.Kelly was writing for other acts around this time. I know you're supposed to read the title as "get out" but I can't help seeing "ghetto ut" instead.
11.(NE) Gary Barlow - So Help Me Girl
His third solo hit, and the second in a row to be a cover version, despite his success as a songwriter in Take That. It paid off to the extent that it managed to make the US Top 50, his biggest success there.
12. (7) Shaggy - Piece Of My Heart ft Marsha
13. (9) R Kelly - Gotham City
14.(12) The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
15.(13) Todd Terry - Something Goin' On
16.(NE) Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Look Into My Eyes
Supposedly a diss track about Three Six Mafia, or some other rap group I don't really remember.
17.(16) Eternal - I Wanna Be The Only One ft BeBe Winans
18.(14) Hanson - Mmm Bop
19.(10) Babyface - How Come, How Long ft Stevie Wonder
20.(NE) Delirious? - Promise
One of their more convincing rockers, partly reworked for single release apparently.
21.(18) Mr President - Coco Jamboo
22.(17) 911 - The Journey
23.(15) No Doubt - Just A Girl {1997}
24.(NE) Super Furry Animals - The International Language Of Screaming

Super Furry Animals - The International Language Of Screaming on MUZU.TV.
Zany video and all, a brilliant shot of pop music that doesn't outstay its welcome. Why wasn't this massive? Why wasn't it even a big hit by their standards?
25.(29) The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You {1997}
26.(19) BT - Flaming June
27.(25) Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close
28.(24) Sarah Brightman And Andrea Bocelli - Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro)
29.(NE) Grace - Down To Earth {1997 reissue}
One of her many, not-hugely-dissimilar, follow-ups to the big hit. This had peaked at 20 in 1996, so the re-release probably wasn't worthwhile.
30.(11) Massive Attack - Risingson
31.(22) Sheryl Crow - A Change Would Do You Good
32.(30) Paula Cole - Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?
33.(20) Dubstar - No More Talk
34.(NE) Full Intention - Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)
If in doubt, dance producers, throw in a Jacksons cover.
35.(28) The Course - Ain't Nobody
36.(NE) Strangelove - The Greatest Show On Earth
Return of the intense indie band who must have cursed Suede for getting there first. Seemingly not big fans of the music industry either.
37.(27) Ghostface Killah - All That I Got Is You
38.(NE) Elate - Somebody Like You
Dance act sampling Clannad. One member was Nigel Ipinson, who had been among the replacements for John Squire in the Stone Roses.
39.(NE) Marradona - Out Of My Head {1997 remix}
A Number 38 hit from 1994. Slightly less popular in this form.
40.(31) Ocean Colour Scene - Hundred Mile High City

48.(NE) Terry Hunter - Harvest For The World
50.(NE) Rahsaan Patterson - Stop By
53.(NE) Fountains Of Wayne - Survival Car
Perhaps they should have made this the second single.
54.(NE) Adeva - Where Is The Love?/The Way That You Feel
55.(NE) Sybil - Still A Thrill
58.(NE) Dreadzone - Moving On
64.(RE) Gary Barlow - Love Won't Wait
71.(NE) Movin' Melodies - Rollerblade
