Charting 1997 extra: the Radio 1 playlist

A little bonus feature, for anyone who hasn't seen it on Twitter: cribbed from the Buzzjack forum, here's the Radio 1 playlist as published in the early days of their website, in July 1997. The week this applied they hired a new overnight DJ called Chris Moyles, I wonder what happened to him?
How many of these do you remember?

Musically, by far their best single, a strutting soul-flavoured track, although Ronan Keating overdoes it a bit.

A record that I suppose should get some credit for outlandishness. Mrs Brown pointed out that the bizarre lyric "Am I sexual?" made sense in that the Backstreet Boys presumably don't reproduce through cell division. I replied that it would have explained a lot about N-Sync.

Charting 1997: 26th July

It's the week of the big battle between to ex-members of Take That! And, er nobody cares that much, because neither of them is even the highest new entry.

Despite Oasis outselling them more than 2-1 the week before, they had little momentum and this was comfortably able to return after only one week away.

Yes, this is the biggest new song of the week. One of the few tracks on their first (and, as it turned out, only) album written by lead singer Chris Helme. As a result we're spared the cod-metal tendencies of a lot of John Squire's work at this time and this might in fact be their best single. 
08.(NE) Robbie Williams - Lazy Days
The first of many Williams hits co-written by Guy Chambers (though he had also produced 'Old Before I Die'); it's apparently based on an unreleased song by Chambers' former band The Lemon Trees.
09. (5) Michael Jackson - History/Ghosts
10.(NE) Changing Faces - G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T.
One of many hits R.Kelly was writing for other acts around this time. I know you're supposed to read the title as "get out" but I can't help seeing "ghetto ut" instead.
11.(NE) Gary Barlow - So Help Me Girl
His third solo hit, and the second in a row to be a cover version, despite his success as a songwriter in Take That. It paid off to the extent that it managed to make the US Top 50, his biggest success there.

Charting 1997: 19th July

01.(NE) Oasis - D'You Know What I Mean?
Perhaps the last surprising Number One of the year so far, the first new Oasis material in 18 months was never going to slip out quietly, despite its inordinate length, which even Noel Gallagher would now admit was maybe a little overdone. ITN were even tempted to speculate on whether it could join the all-time biggest sellers (it didn't). Personally I'd already rather lost interest by this point.
02. (1) Puff Daddy And Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You
03.(NE) Coolio - C U When U Get There ft 40 Thevz
Unsurprisingly, he got a lot of soundtrack jobs after 'Gangsta's Paradise', and this one from Nothing To Lose (me neither) became his second-biggest-selling single. It is of course based on Pachelbel's Canon.
04.(NE) Gala - Freed From Desire
One of the big dance hits of the year, which succeeds rather despite itself: it's a a very minimal composition and she doesn't have much of a voice, but somehow it's actually sort of good.
05.(NE) Michael Jackson - History/Ghosts
One of his least remembered Top 5s, this combines two more numbers from his remix album, though the former track was of course also the title song of (and thus arguably the sixth single from) his previous album.
The videos are excerpted from an extended longform movie.
06. (2) Sash! - Ecuador
07.(NE) Shaggy - Piece Of My Heart ft Marsha
Returning to his usual formula here. Neither terrible nor memorable.
08. (4) Ultra Nate - Free
09.(NE) R Kelly - Gotham City
Back to the movies. This is basically 'I Believe I Can Fly' again, but with an irritating school choir at the end. 
10.(NE) Babyface - How Come, How Long ft Stevie Wonder
A well-meaning song about domestic violence, allegedly inspired by the Nicole Simpson case. I'm fairly glad he wrote it but I wish he could have done a better job. It's perhaps especially unfortunate to give Stevie Wonder lyrics about opening your eyes.
11.(NE) Massive Attack - Risingson

Their highest-charting single to date (and indeed only once have they got higher since) thanks to a limited-edition release well before any prospect of an album. Their fans had been waiting even longer than the Oasis ones. It's rarely mentioned nowadays but I actually quite like this, one of their best claustrophobic tracks. I don't really know what "Toylike people make me boylike" means, but I sort of understand it anyway.

One of America's top trance producers, Brian Transeau. Calendar reading clearly wasn't such a strong point though, as this was released on the 7th of July. It was later re-released... in January 1998.

Comeback single from the Northern Saint Etienne, complete with sneaky sample from 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart'. Not their highest-charting single but reputedly their biggest seller and probably their best too.
21.(NE) Embrace - One Big Family EP
[One Big Family; Dry Kids; You've Only Got To Stop To Get Better; Butter Wouldn't Melt]
The inexorable rise continues with a second EP, again led by a not very good upbeat track. The difference is that this time the other tracks aren't any better. And the CD had a mastering error so one of the track divisions was in the wrong place.
22. (8) Sheryl Crow - A Change Would Do You Good
23.(NE) Paul McCartney - The World Tonight
Yet another hit for EMI (alongside Embrace, Dubstar, Massive Attack and Shaggy). All leave must have been cancelled in their promo department. I believe this was the first single from Flaming Pie in America, and if it wasn't it probably should have been as it's much tighter and catchier than our lead single 'Young Boy'. Not his sharpest work lyrically, although "I go back so far, I'm in front of me" is another of those great can't-explain-but-know-what-it-means phrases and the reference to hiding from paparazzi was almost prescient. 
He did put in an appearance on the Radio 4 news programme of the same name to promote this.

A bit like 'Slowhand' by the Pointer Sisters, only less interesting.

Teaming up again with Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown, who'd fronted his hit version of 'Keep On Jumpin' the previous year. This, unlike that, was an original song, but still in the same slightly-retro style. Not something I'd have given a second thought to at the time.

07. (4) Hanson - Mmm Bop
08.(NE) Sheryl Crow - A Change Would Do You Good
Finally cracking the Top 10 with the fourth single from her self-titled album, possibly thanks to Michel Gondry's innovative video (which I was never a fan of personally, not least because Crow herself seems so uncomfortable in it). One of her best songs though, a combination of dryly observed lyrics and crunchy lo-fi style production. It's only called 'A Change' on the album though.

Scarily-named Wu-Tang Clan member goes solo with this surprisingly heartwarming tribute to his mother.

Their fourth hit, and their third in a row to peak at 12 in the chart (the ones either side got to 14 and 13!). That fact is possibly more interesting than the song, which is a serviceable but unexciting slowie.

Now, this is rather more like it, the veterans of mellow Scottish indie finally hitting the Top 20 and getting onto Top Of The Pops, albeit with the following wind of musical trends working in their favour. Like many of their singles, this is a Gerry Love song and he puts it so well, how can you not think a sunrise is enough?

I seem to recall reading at the time that the use of "86" as a verb was waitressing slang or something? Certainly, it's not something you'd want to happen to you. Subcircus always seemed like the band who could have been Placebo had Placebo not got there first, and even though the album was released twice it never charted.
