Charting 1997 extra: the Radio 1 playlist

A little bonus feature, for anyone who hasn't seen it on Twitter: cribbed from the Buzzjack forum, here's the Radio 1 playlist as published in the early days of their website, in July 1997. The week this applied they hired a new overnight DJ called Chris Moyles, I wonder what happened to him?
How many of these do you remember?

I've also created a Spotify playlist of the tracks, or at least those that were available. Most of the others will show up on here at some point.

Charting 1997: 2nd August

01. (1) Puff Daddy And Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You
02.(NE) Boyzone - Picture Of You
Musically, by far their best single, a strutting soul-flavoured track, although Ronan Keating overdoes it a bit.
03.(NE) Backstreet Boys - Everybody (Backstreet's Back)
A record that I suppose should get some credit for outlandishness. Mrs Brown pointed out that the bizarre lyric "Am I sexual?" made sense in that the Backstreet Boys presumably don't reproduce through cell division. I replied that it would have explained a lot about N-Sync.
04. (3) Gala - Freed From Desire
05. (2) Oasis - D'You Know What I Mean?
06.(NE) Meredith Brooks - Bitch
Apparently when this charted in the US, some newspapers refused to print the full title. She refused to be photographed without her guitar in those days.
07. (4) Coolio - C U When U Get There ft 40 Thevz
08. (5) Ultra Nate - Free
09.(NE) The Mamas And The Papas - California Dreamin' {1997 re-issue}
Finally making the Top 20 only 31 years after it was originally released, thanks to its use in an advert. Coincidentally, a hit for River City People exactly seven years earlier.
10.(NE) U2 - Last Night On Earth
Another week, another Top 10 U2 hit that nobody remembers. Actually a decent song.
11. (6) Sash! - Ecuador
12.(14) The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
13.(12) Shaggy - Piece Of My Heart ft Marsha
14.(13) R Kelly - Gotham City
15.(15) Todd Terry - Something Goin' On
16.(NE) Morrissey - Alma Matters
His first single for Island, which got a few mentions in that company's 50th anniversary spin-offs, doubtless the first time most people had thought about it for about ten years. Also notable as part of the notorious conspiracy theory that Morrissey foretold the death of a well-known person (though nobody seemed to have noticed it at this point).
17.(17) Eternal - I Wanna Be The Only One ft BeBe Winans
18. (9) Michael Jackson - History/Ghosts
19.(NE) Universal - Rock Me Good
Debut hit from the Australian boy band. Apparently this was big in South America.
20. (7) The Seahorses - Blinded By The Sun
21.(NE) Reef - Yer Old
Funniest song in this chart. Possibly not intentionally.
22.(18) Hanson - Mmm Bop
23.(NE) Bobby D'Ambrosio - Moment Of My Life ft Michelle Weeks
Dance track I don't really remember.
24.(NE) Da Mighty Dub Katz - Magic Carpet Ride
I do remember this one though, one of Norman Cook's many pseudonyms. Rather cheery track.
25.(10) Changing Faces - G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T.
26.(21) Mr President - Coco Jamboo
27. (8) Robbie Williams - Lazy Days
28.(NE) Shena - Let The Beat Hit 'Em
Biggest solo hit by the former JX singer, covering the Lisa Lisa hit.
29.(NE) Omar - Say Nothin' ft Ol' Dirty Bastard
Comeback hit from the British soul singer with the distracting hairstyle.
30.(11) Gary Barlow - So Help Me Girl
31.(19) Babyface - How Come, How Long ft Stevie Wonder
32.(NE) Edwyn Collins - The Magic Piper (Of Love)

You see, he did have another Top 40 hit (two if you count Orange Juice). I keep forgetting how great this song actually is. Wish I'd bought it, now.
I believe that video was inspired by his experiences touring the world promoting 'A Girl Like You'.
33.(25) The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You {1997}
34.(23) No Doubt - Just A Girl {1997}
35.(22) 911 - The Journey
36.(16) Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Look Into My Eyes
37.(NE) Peter Cox - Ain't Gonna Cry Again
Solo hit by the singer from Go West. Later covered by Joe Cocker, although it already sounded enough like him.
38.(27) Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close
39.(28) Sarah Brightman And Andrea Bocelli - Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro)
40.(32) Paula Cole - Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?

42.(NE) John Lydon - Sun
His first and only solo "hit" after the Pistols, PiL and Leftfield/Lydon.
46.(NE) Arkarna - So Little Time
50.(NE) Mulu - Pussycat
53.(NE) Prefab Sprout - Electric Guitars
Their last charting single. Includes the lyric "We were quoted out of context, it was great". Which I've just quoted out of context.
56.(NE) Alexander O'Neal And Cherrelle - Baby Come To Me
Not their most famous collaboration.
58.(NE) Dave Angel - Tokyo Stealth Fighter
61.(NE) Death In Vegas - Dirt
A re-release of an uncharted single from the previous year. Brilliant rock-dance - so good I was going to embed the video until I saw how scary it was.

Charting 1997: 26th July

It's the week of the big battle between to ex-members of Take That! And, er nobody cares that much, because neither of them is even the highest new entry.

01. (2) Puff Daddy And Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You
Despite Oasis outselling them more than 2-1 the week before, they had little momentum and this was comfortably able to return after only one week away.
02. (1) Oasis - D'You Know What I Mean?
03. (4) Gala - Freed From Desire
04. (3) Coolio - C U When U Get There ft 40 Thevz
05. (8) Ultra Nate - Free
06. (6) Sash! - Ecuador
07.(NE) The Seahorses - Blinded By The Sun
Yes, this is the biggest new song of the week. One of the few tracks on their first (and, as it turned out, only) album written by lead singer Chris Helme. As a result we're spared the cod-metal tendencies of a lot of John Squire's work at this time and this might in fact be their best single.
08.(NE) Robbie Williams - Lazy Days
The first of many Williams hits co-written by Guy Chambers (though he had also produced 'Old Before I Die'); it's apparently based on an unreleased song by Chambers' former band The Lemon Trees.
09. (5) Michael Jackson - History/Ghosts
10.(NE) Changing Faces - G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T.
One of many hits R.Kelly was writing for other acts around this time. I know you're supposed to read the title as "get out" but I can't help seeing "ghetto ut" instead.
11.(NE) Gary Barlow - So Help Me Girl
His third solo hit, and the second in a row to be a cover version, despite his success as a songwriter in Take That. It paid off to the extent that it managed to make the US Top 50, his biggest success there.
12. (7) Shaggy - Piece Of My Heart ft Marsha
13. (9) R Kelly - Gotham City
14.(12) The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
15.(13) Todd Terry - Something Goin' On
16.(NE) Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Look Into My Eyes
Supposedly a diss track about Three Six Mafia, or some other rap group I don't really remember.
17.(16) Eternal - I Wanna Be The Only One ft BeBe Winans
18.(14) Hanson - Mmm Bop
19.(10) Babyface - How Come, How Long ft Stevie Wonder
20.(NE) Delirious? - Promise
One of their more convincing rockers, partly reworked for single release apparently.
21.(18) Mr President - Coco Jamboo
22.(17) 911 - The Journey
23.(15) No Doubt - Just A Girl {1997}
24.(NE) Super Furry Animals - The International Language Of Screaming

Super Furry Animals - The International Language Of Screaming on MUZU.TV.
Zany video and all, a brilliant shot of pop music that doesn't outstay its welcome. Why wasn't this massive? Why wasn't it even a big hit by their standards?
25.(29) The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You {1997}
26.(19) BT - Flaming June
27.(25) Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close
28.(24) Sarah Brightman And Andrea Bocelli - Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro)
29.(NE) Grace - Down To Earth {1997 reissue}
One of her many, not-hugely-dissimilar, follow-ups to the big hit. This had peaked at 20 in 1996, so the re-release probably wasn't worthwhile.
30.(11) Massive Attack - Risingson
31.(22) Sheryl Crow - A Change Would Do You Good
32.(30) Paula Cole - Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?
33.(20) Dubstar - No More Talk
34.(NE) Full Intention - Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)
If in doubt, dance producers, throw in a Jacksons cover.
35.(28) The Course - Ain't Nobody
36.(NE) Strangelove - The Greatest Show On Earth
Return of the intense indie band who must have cursed Suede for getting there first. Seemingly not big fans of the music industry either.
37.(27) Ghostface Killah - All That I Got Is You
38.(NE) Elate - Somebody Like You
Dance act sampling Clannad. One member was Nigel Ipinson, who had been among the replacements for John Squire in the Stone Roses.
39.(NE) Marradona - Out Of My Head {1997 remix}
A Number 38 hit from 1994. Slightly less popular in this form.
40.(31) Ocean Colour Scene - Hundred Mile High City

48.(NE) Terry Hunter - Harvest For The World
50.(NE) Rahsaan Patterson - Stop By
53.(NE) Fountains Of Wayne - Survival Car
Perhaps they should have made this the second single.
54.(NE) Adeva - Where Is The Love?/The Way That You Feel
55.(NE) Sybil - Still A Thrill
58.(NE) Dreadzone - Moving On
64.(RE) Gary Barlow - Love Won't Wait
71.(NE) Movin' Melodies - Rollerblade

Charting 1997: 19th July

01.(NE) Oasis - D'You Know What I Mean?
Perhaps the last surprising Number One of the year so far, the first new Oasis material in 18 months was never going to slip out quietly, despite its inordinate length, which even Noel Gallagher would now admit was maybe a little overdone. ITN were even tempted to speculate on whether it could join the all-time biggest sellers (it didn't). Personally I'd already rather lost interest by this point.
02. (1) Puff Daddy And Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You
03.(NE) Coolio - C U When U Get There ft 40 Thevz
Unsurprisingly, he got a lot of soundtrack jobs after 'Gangsta's Paradise', and this one from Nothing To Lose (me neither) became his second-biggest-selling single. It is of course based on Pachelbel's Canon.
04.(NE) Gala - Freed From Desire
One of the big dance hits of the year, which succeeds rather despite itself: it's a a very minimal composition and she doesn't have much of a voice, but somehow it's actually sort of good.
05.(NE) Michael Jackson - History/Ghosts
One of his least remembered Top 5s, this combines two more numbers from his remix album, though the former track was of course also the title song of (and thus arguably the sixth single from) his previous album.
The videos are excerpted from an extended longform movie.
06. (2) Sash! - Ecuador
07.(NE) Shaggy - Piece Of My Heart ft Marsha
Returning to his usual formula here. Neither terrible nor memorable.
08. (4) Ultra Nate - Free
09.(NE) R Kelly - Gotham City
Back to the movies. This is basically 'I Believe I Can Fly' again, but with an irritating school choir at the end.
10.(NE) Babyface - How Come, How Long ft Stevie Wonder
A well-meaning song about domestic violence, allegedly inspired by the Nicole Simpson case. I'm fairly glad he wrote it but I wish he could have done a better job. It's perhaps especially unfortunate to give Stevie Wonder lyrics about opening your eyes.
11.(NE) Massive Attack - Risingson

Their highest-charting single to date (and indeed only once have they got higher since) thanks to a limited-edition release well before any prospect of an album. Their fans had been waiting even longer than the Oasis ones. It's rarely mentioned nowadays but I actually quite like this, one of their best claustrophobic tracks. I don't really know what "Toylike people make me boylike" means, but I sort of understand it anyway.
12. (6) The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
13. (5) Todd Terry - Something Goin' On
14. (7) Hanson - Mmm Bop
15.(10) No Doubt - Just A Girl {1997}
16. (9) Eternal - I Wanna Be The Only One ft BeBe Winans
17. (3) 911 - The Journey
18.(13) Mr President - Coco Jamboo
19.(NE) BT - Flaming June
One of America's top trance producers, Brian Transeau. Calendar reading clearly wasn't such a strong point though, as this was released on the 7th of July. It was later re-released... in January 1998.
20.(NE) Dubstar - No More Talk
Comeback single from the Northern Saint Etienne, complete with sneaky sample from 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart'. Not their highest-charting single but reputedly their biggest seller and probably their best too.
21.(NE) Embrace - One Big Family EP
[One Big Family; Dry Kids; You've Only Got To Stop To Get Better; Butter Wouldn't Melt]
The inexorable rise continues with a second EP, again led by a not very good upbeat track. The difference is that this time the other tracks aren't any better. And the CD had a mastering error so one of the track divisions was in the wrong place.
22. (8) Sheryl Crow - A Change Would Do You Good
23.(NE) Paul McCartney - The World Tonight
Yet another hit for EMI (alongside Embrace, Dubstar, Massive Attack and Shaggy). All leave must have been cancelled in their promo department. I believe this was the first single from Flaming Pie in America, and if it wasn't it probably should have been as it's much tighter and catchier than our lead single 'Young Boy'. Not his sharpest work lyrically, although "I go back so far, I'm in front of me" is another of those great can't-explain-but-know-what-it-means phrases and the reference to hiding from paparazzi was almost prescient.
He did put in an appearance on the Radio 4 news programme of the same name to promote this.
24.(15) Sarah Brightman And Andrea Bocelli - Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro)
25.(16) Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close
26.(NE) The Braxtons - Slow Flow
A bit like 'Slowhand' by the Pointer Sisters, only less interesting.
27.(11) Ghostface Killah - All That I Got Is You
28.(14) The Course - Ain't Nobody
29.(22) The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You {1997}
30.(24) Paula Cole - Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?
31.(18) Ocean Colour Scene - Hundred Mile High City
32.(12) Alisha's Attic - Air We Breathe
33.(21) Fun Lovin' Criminals - I'm Not In Love/Scooby Snacks
34.(20) Celine Dion - Call The Man
35.(19) Echo & The Bunnymen - Nothing Lasts Forever
36.(NE) Howie B - Angels Go Bald; Too
I think it was around this time he was on tour with U2 (whose album he'd done some production on) until he got busted for drugs. Not the only person in this chart that's happened to of course.
37.(27) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Love Rollercoaster
38.(25) Pet Shop Boys - Somewhere
39.(26) Az Yet - Hard To Say I'm Sorry
40.(NE) Silverchair - Abuse Me
Oh go and abuse yoursel- no, that didn't quite come out right.

51.(NE) Tracey Lee - The Theme (It's Party Time)
52.(NE) The Jungle Brothers - Brain
56.(NE) Tito Puente Jr And The Latin Rhythm - Oye Como Va {1997 remix}

58.(NE) Motley Crue - Afraid
59.(RE) George Michael - Star People '97
61.(NE) Scarfo - Alkaline
69.(RE) Robbie Williams - Old Before I Die
74.(RE) Wet Wet Wet - Strange

Charting 1997: 12th July

Another busy week.

01. (1) Puff Daddy And Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You
02. (2) Sash! - Ecuador
03.(NE) 911 - The Journey
I'm a bit surprised this hasn't yet been an X-Factor winner's single.
04. (6) Ultra Nate - Free
05.(NE) Todd Terry - Something Goin' On
Teaming up again with Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown, who'd fronted his hit version of 'Keep On Jumpin' the previous year. This, unlike that, was an original song, but still in the same slightly-retro style. Not something I'd have given a second thought to at the time.
06. (5) The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
07. (4) Hanson - Mmm Bop
08.(NE) Sheryl Crow - A Change Would Do You Good
Finally cracking the Top 10 with the fourth single from her self-titled album, possibly thanks to Michel Gondry's innovative video (which I was never a fan of personally, not least because Crow herself seems so uncomfortable in it). One of her best songs though, a combination of dryly observed lyrics and crunchy lo-fi style production. It's only called 'A Change' on the album though.
09. (7) Eternal - I Wanna Be The Only One ft BeBe Winans
10. (3) No Doubt - Just A Girl {1997}
11.(NE) Ghostface Killah - All That I Got Is You
Scarily-named Wu-Tang Clan member goes solo with this surprisingly heartwarming tribute to his mother.
12.(NE) Alisha's Attic - Air We Breathe
Their fourth hit, and their third in a row to peak at 12 in the chart (the ones either side got to 14 and 13!). That fact is possibly more interesting than the song, which is a serviceable but unexciting slowie.
13.(10) Mr President - Coco Jamboo
14. (8) The Course - Ain't Nobody
15.(13) Sarah Brightman And Andrea Bocelli - Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro)
16.(14) Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close
17.(NE) Teenage Fanclub - Ain't That Enough
Now, this is rather more like it, the veterans of mellow Scottish indie finally hitting the Top 20 and getting onto Top Of The Pops, albeit with the following wind of musical trends working in their favour. Like many of their singles, this is a Gerry Love song and he puts it so well, how can you not think a sunrise is enough?
18.(11) Ocean Colour Scene - Hundred Mile High City
19.(16) Echo & The Bunnymen - Nothing Lasts Forever
20.(19) Celine Dion - Call The Man
21.(12) Fun Lovin' Criminals - I'm Not In Love/Scooby Snacks
22.(31) The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For You {1997}
23.(NE) Diddy - Give Me Love {1997 remix}
AKA producer Richard Dearlove. Ironically, he later successfully sued the act at Number One, who now uses the stage name Diddy everywhere except the UK.
24.(28) Paula Cole - Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?
25. (9) Pet Shop Boys - Somewhere
26.(25) Az Yet - Hard To Say I'm Sorry
27.(27) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Love Rollercoaster
28.(24) Cast - Guiding Star
29.(17) The Age Of Love - The Age Of Love - The Remixes
30.(NE) 3 Colours Red - Copper Girl
Showing they could do more than one-dimensional neo-punk rock if they tried. Unfortunately they rarely did.
31.(15) The New Power Generation - The Good Life {1997}
32.(18) Wyclef Jean - We Trying To Stay Alive ft Refugee Allstars
33.(30) Savage Garden - I Want You
34.(29) Finley Quaye - Sunday Shining
35.(22) Blur - On Your Own
36.(NE) Laurnea - Days Of Youth
Ex-member of Loose Ends makes a play for Erykah Badu's territory.
37.(NE) Robin S - It Must Be Love
Contrary to popular belief, she did have hits that weren't 'Show Me Love', but many of them were fairly obvious rehashes of it, this one included.
38.(NE) The Supernaturals - Love Has Passed Away
Possibly one single too far from their album, though it's rather fun in an OTT, drama-queen way. Even the cassette single which included their previous hits couldn't help this far into the Top 40 though.
39.(33) DJ Quicksilver - Bellissima
40.(23) James - Waltzing Along

43.(NE) Phil Collins - Wear My Hat
Thanks for the offer Phil, but I think your need is greater than mine.

45.(NE) For Real - Like I Do
46.(NE) D*Note - Waiting Hopefully
51.(NE) GUN - My Sweet Jane
54.(NE) The Wallflowers - One Headlight
It was reported at the time that lead singer Jakob Dylan had it written into all contracts involving the band that nobody could mention who his dad was in the publicity.

56.(NE) Subcircus - 86'd
I seem to recall reading at the time that the use of "86" as a verb was waitressing slang or something? Certainly, it's not something you'd want to happen to you. Subcircus always seemed like the band who could have been Placebo had Placebo not got there first, and even though the album was released twice it never charted.
57.(NE) The Lost Boyz - Love, Peace And Nappiness
60.(NE) Live - Freaks
71.(NE) Bedrock - Set In Stone/Forbidden Zone
73.(NE) Linoleum - Marquis
They famously released many singles around this time, most of them on 7"s with sleeves made from... well, you can probably guess what. This was the only one to register an official chart position, though it also seems to be the only one not on YouTube.
